South Africa’s Biggest Exhibitions & Trade Shows

South Africa’s Biggest Exhibitions & Trade Shows

BizTradeShows.com recently released their list of the biggest trade shows around the world. The company has made it easy to break down the biggest and best trade shows by country, industry and month, with the aim of helping and facilitating business opportunities for SME’s, in finding relevant trade shows to either visit or exhibit on.

The company said that the evaluation of each trade show is based on a rigorous selection process that involves a panel of industry experts.

Criteria for the rankings include: The industry acumen of each trade show, the number of registered exhibitors, number of foot traffic through the doors, economic status of the host country, popularity and the impact of the trade show on the economy.

Visit here, to see our post on the Top 100 Trade Shows Worldwide.

The South African Top 100 Trade Shows

There may be some dispute over the exact numbers and ranking system but here is their list of Top trade shows in South Africa.

Quick Take Aways:

The Automobile industry dominates the Top 10. With, Automechanika South Africa and the Johannesburg Motor Show ranking 1 & 4 respectively.

According to the Automechanika South Africa website, they have 547 Exhibitor companies
(383 international companies from 25 countries, 30% South Africa, 70% International) and a visitor count of 9 450 for the 2011 event.

Compare that with the No1 on the worldwide list  being, the Magic Apparel Show in Las Vegas, which has over 5 000 exhibitors and 60 000 visitors, you can see a massive difference in numbers. (And the India International Trade Show has over 100 000 visitors.

But remember the judging criteria does not necessarily focus on the highest numbers. For instance, Electro Mining which ranks number 4 on the South African list, triumphs Automechanika on both visitor and exhibitor stats. (Electro Mining – Exhibitors 730 and visitors 35 000). The Johannesburg Motor Show has a target of 250 000 visitors.

Green Expo to Give away a R1.2 million House

In order to enhance and facilitate awareness of green living, The Green Venture Group has partnered with The Green Expo to this year give away an Eco Home valued at R1.2 million.

The beautiful and highly functional family home will be built “off the grid” in a one-of-a-kind security village in the picturesque Wellington valley and all visitors to The Green Expo will be in the running to win this life changing prize.

More than just a property development, the eco-village in Wellington is being designed and constructed according to the most innovative sustainability principles, using environmentally friendly materials, products and even service providers. This is to be the pilot project of a series of similar security villages planned for various locations in South Africa.

The Green Expo in association with National Geographic Channel takes place from the 28th to the 30th of September at the Sandton Convention Centre and invites members of the public to discover practical solutions that will allow them to harness their green consciousness in a fun and sustainable way.

Presented by the multi award-winning organisers of the SABC Education Baba Indaba, this comprehensive trade and consumer exhibition promises to be an informative and interactive event not to be missed.

With the Expo byline Sustainability is your Responsibility underpinning the event, complex issues such as climate change, biodiversity, biotechnology and social investment will be addressed by leaders in the field, while exhibitors will showcase cutting-edge products, services and sustainable eco-design, including the latest hybrid vehicles.

Nampak Bevcan, in partnership with Collect-a-Can, will once again bring topical issues to the fore with a comprehensive Main State Programme, which includes expert speakers, interactive discussions and even cutting-edge recycled fashion.

Chris Naudé, CEO of The Green Expo comments: “The primary objective of The Green Expo is to promote environmental sustainability as a way of life; to make sustainability cool, sexy and fashionable, not just responsible! This cause, and as such the expo, is close to our green hearts and we see it as a unique opportunity for eco-warriors to showcase what’s out there for people who want to do more to appease the tree-hugger within. We are also extremely excited to have the opportunity to give away an exquisite eco home, built according to the principles we strive to promote! The winner of the home will be drawn from all visitors to The Green Expos to be held in Sandton and Cape Town, and the winners will be announced in Cape Town on Sunday 25 November 2012.”

In keeping with their mantra, The Green Expo will also be instituting green measures of its own, ensuring all green credentials are fulfilled! The organisers will ensure waste reduction through the recycling of all paper and plastics, as well as biodegradable waste through compost production. Energy consumption will be kept to a minimum through the various energy-saving measures being implemented and all the mouth-watering meals served at the event will also be prepared from organic produce only.

Don’t miss this first-of-its-kind event in Sandton, open from 10:00 – 18:00 on each of the three show days. Tickets are R50 each, but visitors who cycle to the event get in free!

The Green Expo in association with National Geographic Channel, 28 to 30 September 2012 at the Sandton Convention Centre. For more information visit www.thegreenexpo.co.za/ or follow @GreenexpoSA for regular updates.

CTICC Chief Executive Office Rashid Toefy announced that an award-winning Cape Town trio of architects – Piet Bakker of Stauch Voster Architects, Anya van der Merwe of Van der Merwe Miszewski Architects and Mokena Makeka of Makeka Design Lab – have been awarded the contract for the design of the new expansion of the convention centre.

“It is the goal of the CTICC to be the best long-haul international convention centre by 2020 and this exciting expansion project and the calibre of architects who have been appointed to lead the process, are essential to achieving this goal,” Toefy told the media at a briefing on Thursday morning.

The expansion of the CTICC will be a major boost not only for Cape Town in General, but also for small business operating in the conference and exhibition industry, but also in supporting industries such as hospitality and tourism. Business tourism in particular is major source of income in Cape Town and South Africa.

As a small business in the exhibition and trade show industry HOTT3D is relishing this expansion and looks forward to further growth in our own company.
