Architects announced for CTICC Expansion

Via Scoop.itExhibitions, Conferences & Trade Shows – South Africa

CTICC Chief Executive Office Rashid Toefy announced that an award-winning Cape Town trio of architects – Piet Bakker of Stauch Voster Architects, Anya van der Merwe of Van der Merwe Miszewski Architects and Mokena Makeka of Makeka Design Lab – have been awarded the contract for the design of the new expansion of the convention centre.

“It is the goal of the CTICC to be the best long-haul international convention centre by 2020 and this exciting expansion project and the calibre of architects who have been appointed to lead the process, are essential to achieving this goal,” Toefy told the media at a briefing on Thursday morning.

The expansion of the CTICC will be a major boost not only for Cape Town in General, but also for small business operating in the conference and exhibition industry, but also in supporting industries such as hospitality and tourism. Business tourism in particular is major source of income in Cape Town and South Africa.

As a small business in the exhibition and trade show industry HOTT3D is relishing this expansion and looks forward to further growth in our own company.

SARS zero rates VAT for EXSA members only? – Updated 20 March 2012

Excellent News for the “little” companies in the South African Exhibition and Trade Show Industry

This reply just on from SARS

A VAT Ruling is issued on the facts and circumstances of a specific vendor or class of vendors. Should your client(s) feel that the facts and circumstances are the same as those vendors referred to in a ruling, they are welcome to apply for a ruling.”

Rodney Govender Legal & Policy: Indirect Tax Policy Tel 012 422 5103  Fax 012 422 5043 email rgovender@sars.gov.za

So its now possible to apply even though one is not a member of EXSA. Though the reply does not state that we will be approved for such a ruling, its certainly a step in the right direction. I will update again once I have applied and can clarify the process to achieve this ruling.

Thanks to SARS for the fast reply

Though not a new topic, this is sure to be more and more controversial as non EXSA members catch wind of this if they haven’t already.

“EXSA will be, as part of the condition of the Ruling, forwarding the details of all fully paid members of the Association, along with corresponding VAT numbers to SARS, and then subsequently every six months. The Ruling is applicable for a two-year period to August 2012”

The release is on EXSA’s Bizcommunity press release here in 2010…so only 5 months to go to see if SARS renews this ruling or not.

How can SARS exclude a far larger number of members of the exhibition and conference industry. Non EXSA members make up the majority of companies working in this industry (though maybe not actual people numbers). Though they happen to be the smaller companies that are not members. Most of the largest companies in the industry appear to be members. EXSA numbers possibly 200 (?) companies at best…A guess as I have not been able to locate current figures and had to manually count on their member list.

In my view this is an exclusionary and discriminatory law against those companies who choose not to be EXSA members.

Effectively SARS has made it mandatory to be an EXSA member. If we don’t join we will most likely lose our foreign clients as we cannot be competitive if we have to charge VAT. 14% can be a huge amount of a 500 ZAR pitch

Now seeking legal opinion…and first comments suggest SARS will be forced to allow all companies working in the industry the same privilege or cancel the privilege outright or remove the ruling altogether.

My accountant has just sent off a query to Mr Govender at SARS to seek clarity on this situation…I will update as responses come in

CTICC Expansion Plans

Via Scoop.itExhibitions, Conferences & Trade Shows – South Africa

Construction work is expected to commence by mid-2013, and will be completed at the end of 2015. The development will cost approximately R4.5 billion, adding an additional 49 000m⊃2; of lettable space to the Centre.

CTICC management have already secured the 10 000-delegate strong 35th International Geological Congress for August 2016, which will require use of the full expanded convention space soon to be built. This sets a firm deadline for the completion of construction work. In the mean time, the CTICC’s marketing team is continually bidding to host new events, with 178 conferences booked for the Centre between now and 2020.

The plans are ambitious, but perfectly feasible, and are set to completely alter the face of Cape Town’s foreshore area. The expansion will consist of new exhibition space, an office tower, a Netcare Hospital tower, a residential tower and a parking garage. On top of said garage will be a rejuvenated version of Founder’s Garden, which will slope down to towards the street and extend towards the Artscape. Over 10 000m⊃2; of retail will be included in this new precinct.   The architects will be aiming for a 6-Star Green Star rating, which will cement the expansion as one of the greenest buildings in the world.   The Cape Town International Convention Centre has been a major success since its inception in 2003.

Having attracted over 5 million visitors to the city, and created over 60 000 jobs, today it is the only profitable convention centre in the world and hosts more events than Johannesburg and Durban combined.   The expansion is sure to cement the Cape Town International Convention Centre as Africa’s premier destination for conferencing and events.

AfricaCom 2011 Awards

The 4th annual AfricaCom Awards took place at The Lookout in the V&A Waterfront on the 9th of November 2011. Celebrating companies that contribute towards telecoms in Africa the event was bursting at the seams with attendee’s from the concurrent AfricaCom conference and exhibition that was taking place at the CTICC on the 9th and 10th of November.

Linking with GearhouseSA, The H3D-HOTT3D crew created temporary infrastructure  to bring across both the event and sponsor branding and also to create an event split into the sitdown awards part of the evening as well as the all important after party. Attendee’s were greeted by a branded entrance and red carpeted to the dinner and after party. As the event is sponsored by Gateway branding was crucial and feedback is that they where very happy with the result. From cards for the flowers to 4m high bar backdrops…sponsor and event branding was everywhere, yet not invasive.

Your favourite “cousin”, Barry Hilton was the MC and humourous edge and, as always, was a hit with audience. Jimmy Dludlu was the headline performer at the afterparty and truly lived up to expectations. He is simply superb and the audience really got down to his tunes.

Operation Shoebox was the official charity for 2011. The link with AfricaCom propels OS into an excellent financial position to further its super work in the underprivileged communities. They really do excellent work and are well worth supporting…hint hint! 🙂  Click the link and make a contribution.

This years Awards setup really has raised the bar for this event and has also created a usable template moving towards next years events with most concepts destined to be retained and expanded upon.

The H3D crew created both the graphic artwork digitally and then actioned that into the afterparty bar backdrop using our modular octanorm systems. We also linked with Inflate making use of their inflatable, LED backlit walls to section the afterparty area from the dinner area. All furnishings were supplied from our stock.  The setup was all done during the first day of AfricaCom after an intensive 3 day show buildup. The Awards breakdown then happening at 2am and loadout at 8am….and then onto the main event strike that same evening of the 10th until 2am. The times placed the crews under fatigue pressure, but were handled excellently. As with all large events we sleep when it’s over.

A hugely successful AfricaCom for the H3D-HOTT3D team this year.

Pharmaplan teams up with OperationShoebox

At Biological Psychiatry currently on in Stellenbosch Pharmaplan teamed up with Operation Shoebox to create an activity for delegates to participate in.

Operation Shoebox

At medical congresses delegate participation in activities is big in South Africa. At any one show delegates can be seen making pottery, painting, creating caricatures…even wall climbing.

On Pharmaplans stands delegates are encouraged to personalise shoe-boxes in their own unique way using paint, pens, stickons, glitter. These boxes will then be filled with clothing, toiletries, stationary and a toy or two by Pharmaplan and donated at Christmas to the underprivileged or the sick.

We are aiming at 200 decorated boxes and are also encouraging Doctors and delegates to go online at the stand to do their own personal donation…This really is a fantastic initiative as not only satisfies the exhibits needs, but does good too and that’s always a win win situation.

The stand itself flanks the entrance doors to the lectures venues and as such was designed in a split manner. Pharmaplan is launching a new product Oleanz Rapitab and hence that signage is prominent. Every delegate must at some stage pass through the doors between the stand and as such the visibility and possibility for interaction is high.

We took great care to make sure that we chose the best possible position for this client to maximise their exhibit value.

Pharmaplan SASUOG exhibit

Based on a 6m x 2m floorspace this stand was an offshoot of an exhibit built previously for the Gyneacology division of Pharmaplan. It made use of existing graphic panels.  Products on display included Smecta, Linola, Cosmofer, Cathejell and Lomexin.

SASUOG was held at the Upper Eastside Hotel in Woodstock, Cape Town.

The exhibit used the following finishes

1. Raised tongue and groove timber flooring

2. Octanorm aluminium structure

3. Stretched fabric prints

4. Custom bar counters with backlit graphic panels

5. Hospitality including a water cooler and popcorn (always a hit on these shows)

The exhibit was in a prime position at the main entrance of the hotel Lobby ensuring a very busy stand for the congress duration. Popcorn is always a hit at these events to such an extent that we need to hire in extra help to run the popcorn machine.

Another superb and economical exhibit produced for Pharmaplan.

Pfizer – SASMO SASCRO 2011

Our largest project of the year to date.

Pfizer took the main hospitality suite at SASMO/ SASCRO Oncology medical congress in August.  This entailed treating the entire stage at the Sun City Superbowl.

Pfizer SASMO SASCRO 2012 Render

We chose a concept that was quick to install. All external walls where inflatable and internally lit with colour changing LED lighting. This created a soft space that was inviting, comfortable and an escape from the business of conferencing and the main show floor for doctors.

Features included:

1. Air-roof entrance

2. Inflate walls with internal LED lighting changing from soft white to subtle green

3. A fully stocked  smoothie bar

4. A fully stocked espresso bar

5. A variety of snacks

6. A full lounge and cafe area to each side of the exhibit

7. 2 large meeting suites with projector facilities utilising Octanorm Maxima

8. Free WiFi for delegates

9. Computer terminals for those delegates who didn’t bring their laptops.

10.  2 x emergency exits

Internally furnishings consisted of custom bar units, new furnishings, Octanorm maxima structures as well as eco-friendly Xanita board units to display product detail.

The crew at HOTT3D handled all aspects so that it was literally a walk-on, walk-off scenario for client.

All in all this project rolled out perfectly and smoothly, which is indicative of the pre-event planning we put into such projects
